Moose on Parade

Moose on Parade is an annual fundraising event in Talkeetna, Alaska which benefits the Talkeetna Chamber of Commerce, the Denali Arts Council, and the Talkeenta Historical Society. Local businesses, artists, and individuals of all ages decorate large or small plywood moose cutouts. The decorated moose are part of the Independence Day parade after which they are auctioned off.  Starting in 2013, we have created moose in the small size which have sold for up to $400 at auction.

2015 - "Canada Moose and Mooselings"
A collaboration for 2015.  The bodies of the adult "Canada Moose" and the mooselings are hand knitted by Janet Brenan Sherry, faces crafted from polymer clay by Michael J. Sherry
A whimsical interpretation of a moose / Canada goose hybrid.
2014 - "Alaskan Malamoose"
Hand knitted and painted by Janet Brenan Sherry
An homage to our favorite breed of dog, the Alaskan Malamute.  They are consummate freighting dogs, capable of pulling up to 2,000 pounds on a sled.  Imagine what a "malamoose" could haul!
2014 - "Vincent van Moose"
Hand crafted by Michael J. Sherry from polymer clay on the plywood frame
Inspired by van Gogh's "Self-portrait with bandaged ear," "Landscape with the chateau of Auvers at sunset," and "Starry Night."
2013 - "Moosk Ox"
Hand knitted and painted by Janet Brenan Sherry

One of our favorite Alaskan animals is the Musk Ox.  These survivors from prehistoric times thrive in Alaska's harsh climate and produce the warmest, light-weight, natural fiber known.  Called "qiviut", it is the fluffy undercoat hair of the musk ox.  We volunteer at The Musk Ox Farm and participate in hand-combing the qiviut every spring.
